25. For Proteus

I call Proteus, keeper of the keys
of the sea, the first born, who has revealed
the origin of all nature, changing
holy matter into many different
forms. All-honored, great counselor, who knows
what is, what was, and what will be hereafter.

For he holds everything himself; and he
can change himself, unlike some other gods,
who have their thrones on snowy Olympos
and fly through the air, over land and sea.

For nature first placed everything in him,
Proteus; Father, come to these mystic
rites with your holy foresight; send a good
end to a life rich in accomplishments.
